Handy hints to get & stay active

Getting started can be the hardest part but within a few weeks you will notice a whole new positive “can-do” approach to being more active. Here are some handy hints that might help you:

Start slowly and set realistic goals. There is no shame in starting by walking for 10 minutes, swimming three lengths or doing five sit-ups. Doing something is always better than nothing and making small changes means that you’re more likely to stick to it.

Research what is available. You may be surprised at how many new and exciting opportunities there are for getting active in your local area.

Keep an eye on what you are doing.
You will be surprised how much you do, make sure you keep a track of your progress it will motivate you to keep going. Keep a diary, or try using a pedometer.

Enjoy it.
Find something you enjoy doing, if you enjoy it you are more likely to stick to it. Put on some lively music when you do the housework or walk to the shops with a neighbour or friend.

Be active with your family
. If you’re struggling for time, why not try doing activities as a family, maybe a family walk or bike ride – these can be fun, why not take a picnic!

Socialise with your friends
. Have a change from your weekly shopping trip or swop your pub time and take part in an activity with your friends...you may even save some money!

Every little counts! All activity helps, so try and build as much into your daily life as possible. Take the stairs instead of the lift, get off the bus a stop early or leave your desk at lunch.

Enjoy the extra energy.
Exercise gives you more energy and increases your confidence; you will be surprised how quickly you notice these changes!

Sit down less.
Find more active ways to spend your leisure time, swop the TV for a game on the Wii.

Ask friends how they got started
… maybe you can join them?
