Milton Keynes swimming instructor wins major BBC Sports Award

At the 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year event on 13 December, Doreen Adcock, a 72-year-old swimming instructor, won the Sports Unsung Hero award. Doreen has taught over 13,000 people to swim in Milton Keynes over the last 35 years. Doreen, who also has a Facebook page dedicated to her, has helped three generations of people to swim in the local area.

Olympic swimming champion, Rebecca Adlington, and snooker legend, Jimmy White, were on hand to give the award to Doreen. Doreen has taught children and adults of all abilities to swim over the years. She reflects: ”to see them in their own surroundings and to know I will have produced a good little swimmer, gives me such a warm feeling inside me. Thank you."

For Lee Mason, Director of Bucks Sport, this award highlights the unique sporting achievements taking place in Bucks. “It’s the work of individuals such as Doreen which helps us to create such an active and successful sporting county. And each year, in recognition of their dedication, we hold the Bucks Sport Awards to celebrate how local people have used the power of sport to change individuals and communities for the better.”
