Launch of Buckinghamshire SportsAid Foundation

A luncheon hosted by the Chairman of Bucks Sport, Peter Thomas MBE and Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council, Pauline Wilkinson MBE, was held on 13 May at Wycombe Wanderers Football Club in High Wycombe to launch the new Bucks SportsAid Foundation.

Tim Lawler, Chief Executive of SportsAid and Paul Dickenson, SportsAid Trustee, ex Olympic Athlete and BBC commentator from High Wycombe also attended the launch which saw a number of grants made to some local  and young,  talented athletes including:

Joshua Radvan, 15 year old modern pentathlete from Beaconsfield

Samuel Prosser, 17 year old rower from Marlow

George Lennox, 13 year old judo player from Chesham

Michael Mottram, 17 year old rower from Stoke Mandeville

Omiari Miller, 14 year old basketball player from Shenley

Jo Hunter, 16 year old hockey player from Weston Turvill

Larissa Gateley, 15 year old judo player from Aylesbury

The Foundation aims to raise money to help young Bucks sporting talent.  On average each athlete spends nearly £5,000 per year on equipment, training and travelling.  SportsAid, a national charity, working with Buckinghamshire County Council and the County Sports Partnership are developing partnerships with local companies to help fund these talented young people, who have been identified by the Sport Governing Bodies

The Bucks SportsAid Foundation has been established to support local athletes that have been inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  In partnership with SportsAid - the only UK charity directly helping talented young British sportsmen and women -  the purpose of the Foundation is to develop partnerships with local companies to raise money to support talented sportsmen and women from Bucks to achieve their sporting goals.

That’s why SportsAid is so vital and why Bucks has teamed up with SportsAid to establish a Sports Foundation for the County.

“For me, it wasn’t just the funding that I received from Spots Aid, important though that was in the early stages of my development, but it was the fact that other people recognised my potential and wanted to support me that really spurred me on”

Adrian Moorhouse MBE

Olympic Gold Medallist

Chairman of the Bucks Coordinating Group for the 2012 Games
