Cheers to a fun way for girls to get fit and active

As part of a new initiative to encourage more Key Stage 3 & 4 girls to become active and enjoy sport, Mandeville School recently hosted its first cheerleading course. Fourteen local teachers, coaches, and students attended the course delivered by the UK Cheerleading Association (UKCA).
Cheerleading encompasses dance (both entertainment value & technical), gymnastics, stunting & pyramids and a new element ‘street cheer’, fusing ever popular street dance and cheer moves.

The tempo throughout the day was fast with everyone really enjoying the opportunity to try a new sport. As one participant commented:  ‘I really enjoyed the course and am already thinking of how to get sessions started in my school’.

Participants linked to the Mandeville School Sport Partnership and Buckingham School Sport Partnership will now be using their new found skills in cheerleading, along with the resources provided, to get sessions underway at their school in the build up to an inaugural Cheerleading  District Festival on July 8th at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.

The UKCA tutor, Hannah, commented ‘Cheerleading has become very popular across the country and we are very passionate about spreading the word as we have seen some great results in getting many girls active and enjoying themselves as well as excelling to a high level’.
