Volunteer of the Year

Jan Harper - Winner - Photo - Click Here

Thousands of young people have enjoyed the fun and excitement of playing netball thanks to Jan’s tireless dedication to making this sport accessible to all. Coaching at all levels (club, county and regional) for more than 20 years, Jan’s students have enjoyed great success such as winning the National Schools Finals (U16) for the past two years or having the chance to represent the South Region following selection for the Player Development Programme. Jan volunteers her skills to schools, clubs and the local community and has organised High 5 Netball Sessions, Youth Tournaments (attracting teams from across the South and East Regions), and Netball Skills Days. Each year Jan coaches at the Disability Netball Festival working with players with learning disabilities from across the county. As a Bucks Sport County Coach Mentor, Jan inspires people both on and off the court. After attaining a grant from the Bucks Community Foundation, Jan is giving junior players the opportunity to train as team leaders and umpires. We hope some of Jan’s students will follow in her legendary footsteps!

Jim Lawrence - Runner Up - Photo - Click Here

During the last 20 years, Jim has been competing as a sprinter while doing everything he can to make his club - Marshall Milton Keynes Athletics Club - thrive. As a Level 3 Sprints Coach, Timekeeper, Field Judge, Track Judge and Club Statistician, Jim’s extraordinary skill set has helped the club attain outstanding success, with some of its athletes even performing at the Beijing Olympics last year. Jim manages the Men’s B Team which provides competition for the club’s young athletes while keeping veterans, such as Jim, on their toes. In fact Jim inspires everyone - including his family - to give athletics a go and each year the Lawrence’s manage one of the feeding stations at the Nike Milton Keynes Half Marathon. While Jim may say his best sprinting days are long behind him, we think it would be hard for anyone to keep up with his record of success!

Sharon O’Sullivan - Runner Up - Photo - Click Here

Sharon has dedicated over eight years to inspiring girls and women of all ages to play football. During this time she has been instrumental in setting up and developing girls’ and women’s football teams at the Bucks CC Football Club. In addition to managing these teams, she has helped improve the club’s structure, administration and publicity and there are now more than 300 players – ranging from the U8’s to senior level – all playing within the Berks and Bucks Leagues. To ensure ongoing success, Sharon has set up a parent representative group to help support the running of the club and raise funds for its players. This year alone the group has raised over £3000 for various charities. Initiatives such as this, and Sharon’s role as a child welfare officer, have also enabled the club to achieve FA Charter Standard accreditation. More recently, Sharon has begun to support the local Bucks Girls’ League so it can benefit from her winning experience.
