Iwan Thomas MBE comes to Bucks to award local sport superstars

Individuals and groups, who have made an outstanding sporting contribution locally, came together for a celebratory evening at Horwood House in Buckinghamshire on Friday 27th. November. It was their chance to see if they had won one of the eight prestigious Bucks Sport Awards presented by Iwan Thomas MBE, a former European Champion, Commonwealth Champion, World Cup Winner and current British record holder and arguably the finest 400m runner our country has ever seen. They were joined by special guests such as Toby Pawson (Paralympic Dressage Competitor), together with award sponsors and key leaders from local government, business, education and sport.

The theme for this special event was the “power of sport”. Radio and TV presenter, Richard Carr, joined Iwan as host for the evening, bringing alive the many success stories of local sporting achievement. The eight award categories revealed the impact sport can have on local people and their communities. The awards were for coach (winner: Kate Porter, Wycombe Hockey Club coach), business (winners: Cirkle and Marshall Amplification PLC) and volunteer of the year (winner: Jan Harper, Clan Netball Club, High Wycombe); school (winner: Alfriston School, Beaconsfield) and club of the year (winner: Team Milton Keynes); sport project of the year (the two Aylesbury based projects: Blues and Twos and Community Tennis ); young leader of the year (winner: Anna Collin from Beaconsfield High School) and ‘Unsung hero’ of the year (winners: John Wilford, Maxwell Swim Club, Aylesbury; Milford Callow, Marshall Milton Keynes Athletic Club; and Chris Peterson, Chairman of Bucks CC Football Club).

Chairman of the Bucks & Milton Keynes Sport Board, Peter Thomas, reflected: “It is my firm belief that sport has a unique role to play in shaping individuals and communities, changing lives and improving the wellbeing and quality of life, for so many people of all ages in this country. This special evening was our chance to recognise the valuable contribution of all those who deliver sport at a local level in the county of Buckinghamshire.”
