"Make a Splash!" in the New Year

Whether you want to tip your toe in the water or just dive in, Bucks Sport has a range of activities to keep you fit and active in the New Year

Whether you want to tip your toe in the water or just dive in, Bucks Sport has a range of activities to keep you fit and active in the New Year. Among them are the water-based “Make a Splash!” activities catering for all swimming abilities and people aged sixteen plus. And there is no better time to give them a try with a special offer of £2 off your first “Make a Splash!” class. Classes are now taking place at Stoke Mandeville Stadium and Aqua Vale in Aylesbury. Classes don’t require any previous experience and range from “deep aqua” aerobics to “polo fit”, a fun, instructor-led session that uses water polo to improve fitness.

All the classes are held in friendly and supportive surroundings and led by qualified instructors. Whether you want to get fit, learn a new skill or meet new friends the classes have something for everyone. Margaret Batten, one of the regulars at the Deep Aqua Class held at Stoke Mandeville, explains:

“The classes are fun which is what exercise should be. I’m 69 and have osteoarthritis so I can’t pound away on a running machine whereas the water takes my weight. And of course nobody sees or cares what you look like in your swimsuit!”

Class instructor, Becky Lawrence, is a familiar face in Aylesbury Vale having spent several years coaching and instructing young people and adults in a wide range of water-based activities. For her the Deep Aqua Class is an opportunity for adults to improve their fitness or try something new in a safe, supportive environment.

“We have people from 19 to 60 plus coming to the class. Everyone wears a buoyancy belt so, with the resistance of the water, the aerobics activities give them a real work-out. It’s great for building muscle strength and endurance and the class allows everyone to work at their own pace. Plus the background music is so popular some sing along!”

Currently there are hundreds of opportunities ranging from yoga and ballroom dancing to sports for people with disabilities. And look out for the forthcoming special week of sports and leisure taster sessions taking place across Aylesbury Vale in February. Let Bucks Sport help you keep some of those New Year resolutions and make it a New Year for a New You.
