'Sport Unlimited'

The Sport Unlimited programme aims to provide 'semi-sporty' young people (aged 5-19) with the opportunity to take part in at least 1 more hour of sport/physical activity per week. The programme is an integral part of the Government's plans to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to take part in at least 5 hours of sport/physical activity a week. This '5 hour offer' will be made up of 2 hours high quality curriculum physical education and a further 3 hours of sport delivered beyond the curriculum by a range of school, community and club providers.

Sport Unlimited funding is available to deliver 8-10 week activity blocks (outside of curriculum time) to young people with a target of ensuring they attend at least 60% of the sessions in the block. Any organisation who meets minimum organisational standards (e.g., safegaurding and equity) can apply for the funding. Sport Unlimited
Ensuring more young people have the opportunity to take part in at least five hours of sport and physical activity a week is what Sport Unlimited is all about. Bucks Sport was recently invited by Sport England to be a ‘trailblazer’ Partnership for the implementation of the Sport Unlimited Programme for the South East Region. Activities began in 2008 and during the first two terms of the programme more than 3,000 children and young people regularly attended activities. Our work continues…

Unlimited opportunities for fun
It’s fast, it’s furious and for groups of 9 to 11 year olds in Buckinghamshire it’s the highlight of their week. Learning to play basketball with the help of coach Peter Jenner (known formally as ‘Coach Jenner’) has not only given them the opportunity to try out an exciting sport but to make new friends and have a lot of fun. With the support of Sport Unlimited funding, Coach Jenner has been helping children to learn the basic skills of basketball over a period of ten weeks, giving them the confidence to go on to find local clubs and play

Getting kids off the street and onto the sports field
A Neighbourhood Action Group meeting seems an unlikely place to find the next international rugby player. However last year, when members were discussing ways to occupy local kids and keep them off the streets, introducing a sport that everyone could play seemed to provide the answer. Tim Holmes, Rugby Football Union (RFU) Rugby Development Officer for Bucks, explains: “One of the members happened to play rugby at a local club. So they thought of getting the kids interested in tag rugby. Clare Harrison, a Police Community Support Officer, was also there and immediately supported the idea. And that’s where I came in.”

Chakheil and his winning try
Glenn Gavin from High Wycombe Rugby Union Football Club applied to Bucks Sport to access Sport Unlimited funding to deliver rugby sessions for young people who haven’t had the opportunity to play before.

Chelsea paddles out of her comfort zone
In March 2008 the Longridge Activities Centre, near Marlow, applied to Bucks Sport to access Sport Unlimited funding. Subsequently more than 100 young people attended kayaking activities at the centre for ten weeks with 60 going on to join community clubs based at the centre.
