Sue Imbriano,
Director Childrens Services,
Buckinghamshire Childrens Trust / County Council.
Sue Imbriano has spent all her working life working with and for children, and values the significant role sport plays in the in the lives of many children and young people, and that is has the potential to enable many more to develop, achieve and make a positive contribution through sport.
"Participation in sport can help to tackle obesity and encourage a healthy lifestyle, can engage young people in community activity and reduce the likelihood of them being involved in youth crime or anti-social behaviour, whilst helping decrease the likelihood of young people themselves being the victims of crime, bullying or discrimination. Our Schools and Specialist Sports Colleges are showing that sport can assist young people to learn and improve educational standards and can help them into work through providing training and employment opportunities. It can also contribute to their personal and social development and to their enjoyment of leisure time. Sport can be a particularly powerful for young people in special circumstances such as those in care, with disabilities or not currently in education or employment. Appropriately delivered by skilled teachers, coaches and leaders sport can build self-esteem, confidence, team building and communication skills and can encourage positive behaviour and relationships. Everyone delivering services for children and young people has an important role to play working together to meet their needs and I am keen to see sport playing its full part.”
