National Selection for Lukas

Amersham fencer Lukas Kuhlmey has taken a major step to his dream of representing Britain in the London 2012 Olympic Games, having learned of his selection for the Great Britain team to take part in this years World University Games taking place in Serbia in July.

This is the first time Lukas, who is studying at Kingston University, has been selected for a senior national squad. He will compete in the Mens Epee competition in the championships which are second only to the Olympic Games in terms of international competitors.

Fourteen athletes will be representing Great Britain at the Games in the fencing squad, which will be competing in the capital city at the Belgrade Fair Hall from the 2 – 7 July 2009.

Amongst Lukas' team mates will be Alex O’Connell from Cambridge University. O’Connell was a member of Team GB at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and GB flag bearer at the previous 2007 World University Games in Bangkok. Another Olympian in the GB team will be Martina Emanuel from the University of Milan who made her Olympic debut in the womens foil event in Beijing.

Lukas is one of twelve athletes supported by the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS). TASS is a significant financial supporter for teams competing in the World University Games and has supported Team GBR since 2005. The majority of the athletes have passed through TASS at some stage of their fencing careers.

The GBR fencing team at the 2007 World University Games came home with a bronze medal and are hoping to build on this success in Belgrade.
