Gemma has been competing in sports ever since she was young and has a rich background of winning at the highest level. She was double County Triple Jump Champion at age 15 aswell as District 100m Champion between the ages of 12 and 15.
In July 2008 Gemma was diagnosed with RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) which affected the functioning of the nerves in her right leg. She didn't let this stop her from her sporting interests and she began coaching, officiating and wolunteering at various sporting events.
While studying Law as a undergraduate at Durham University she tried Wheelchair Fencing and found that she really enjoyed competing in it.
