116 teams of five Torchbearers will carry the Paralympic Flame along the 92 mile route from Stoke Mandeville to the Stratford Park where the Relay will conclude at approximately 10pm on the 29th August.
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: ‘The Paralympic Torch Relay celebrates the Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspiration and equality. Whether they have been together for years, or brought together around a common story, each team of five Torchbearers represents the Paralympic values and the power of human endeavour. Today we invite people to show their support for the Torchbearers by coming out to cheer them on as they make their way through Buckinghamshire and help us lead the way to the Paralympic Games.’
On Wednesday 22 August, the English Flame will be created at the summit of Scafell Pike. A group of disabled and non-disabled Scouts use the traditional technique of rubbing flint together to create sparks and kindle a flame. The Flame will then be placed in a miner’s lantern and transferred to London where it will be the focus for a day of Paralympic celebrations. At the same time Flames will be created at the summit of the highest peak of the other three home nations: Ben Nevis (Scotland), Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa (Wales) and Slieve Donard (Northern Ireland).
Each of the four Flames will be taken to Stoke Mandeville, where they will be united during a special ceremony on Tuesday 28 August to create the London 2012 Paralympic Flame.
