Olympic Dreams

The Mongolian Headteacher answers questions from the year 3's & 4's
Olympic Dreams
Mongolian Headteacher with years 5 & 6 in the class room
School No.79 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia has been twinned with Edlesborough Primary School in Buckinghamshire. This has come through the Olympic Dreams project that is a partnership between BBC World Class and the British Council. The project is put in place to inspire children to achieve the greatest in both schools by swapping success stories.

Edlesborough will be following Badar Uugan who is a Olympic Gold medallist who came from the most basic training facilities. Badar spent 9 years at School No.79 and in Beijing 2008 he won the gold medal for boxing. He has raised the profile of his home country and has brought school No.79 a great sense of achievement and hope. Students are hoping that they can follow his example and overcome the harsh condition they grow up in. School No.79 boosts a rich sporting tradition with Nyambayariin Tugstsogt winning silver at the World Amateur Boxing World Championships back in 2009.

The hope is that the stories and achievements that the students from this small school in Mongolia have achieved will help the younger generation of students from Edlesborough School strive for the very best.

Along with swapping success stories Edlesborough will also send one teacher to a special event in London where they will meet teachers from the twinned school.

For 2 days in January the head teacher of School No.79 visited Edlesborough to see what English schools and students are like. He answered questions from the students and Edlesborough were kind enough to invite me along.

Most of the questions were about how different things in Mongolian schools work like; How many students were in a class and what lessons are taught. It was interesting to hear the answers as they were not as varied as you would think. He said that in Mongolia they still have much of the same lessons as they do in England but add in things like agriculture and teach the students how to speak English and Russian on top of speaking Mongolian.

Edlesborough school were visited by Judith Hamer from Team GB’s paralympic basketball team. She was there to tell her story about how she got into the sport and her participation in the BBC 2 programme Beyond Boundaries III - Across the Andes. She was also there to speak about how being in a situation like her's doesn't mean that you can't play sport at the highest level.  ...more

As part of the Olympic Dreams project BBC World class held a conference for all the schools to meet in London on Friday 14th January which would last for the whole weekend. Rekha Slatter from Edlesborough School said this about the conference.  ...more
