A nationwide grassroots campaign to capture the once in a lifetime opportunity of hosting the Olympic Games in the UK will see 5,000 events happen across the UK as part of building the sporting and volunteering legacy from London 2012. The campaign will mark the first national sporting weekend of its kind to be put on by a host country in the immediate afterglow of the Games. Backed by Team GB medal winners past and present, HRH the Duke of Cambridge as well as UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, MP and London 2012 Chairman, Lord Coe KBE. ‘Join In Local Sport’ is an independent charity funded by government with the specific aim of getting as many people as possible to turn up, take part and join in at their local sports facilities on 18th / 19th August - the first weekend after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. Sport clubs and communities across the UK have been preparing for the unprecedented enthusiasm for sport that they always knew hosting the Games in the UK would generate. The ‘Join In’ weekend is designed to help capture the spirit of the Games and bring it back to the place it begins for all great champions - their local sports facilities. Enabling clubs to convert this once in a lifetime wave of interest into help, support and membership from their local community. On 28th August, the London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay will commence from Stoke Mandeville Stadium, Birthplace of the Paralympic Movement. At 8pm, after the lighting ceremony, the Torch will leave the stadium and travel through Aylesbury, Weston Turville and Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire on the start of its historic 24-hour journey to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games the following day in London. The streets along which the Paralympic Flame will be carried during the Torch Relay can be viewed in full at www.london2012.com/paralympictorchrelay. The map gives street-by-street details and estimated start times for when the Paralympic Flame will travel through Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and London. South East residents are encouraged to get involved and go the extra mile to line the streets and share in the excitement of the event as well as celebrate the achievements of the inspirational torchbearers.  ...more

The mascots for the London 2012 Games have been unveiled and have a very special connection with Buckinghamshire. On May 19th the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) unveiled its Olympic Mascot, Wenlock and Paralympic Mascot, Mandeville - named after Stoke Mandeville in Buckinghamshire, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. Britain's most decorated Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey Thompson and LOCOG Director of Paralympic Integration Chris Holmes visited Stoke Mandeville Stadium to support the national launch and reveal the inspiration behind the mascots.  ...more
