Winning countless national events, representing England and Great Britain at international events and being nominated for BBC Personality of the Year, are just some of the achievements of Joey Duck, a former Royal Latin School pupil, who has been running 100m, 200m and 400m races since the age of 11. Having recently taken part in her first senior relay squad at the young age of 20, Joey is focusing more than ever on her training and hoping she will be competing at the London 2012 Games. She reflects on the support from the Bucks SportsAid Foundation.
“It has helped me immensely through the past few years and I am very grateful for the time, support and interest shown in me. Without this financial backing I would have had difficulty in travelling the 80 mile round trip to my coach and training group in North East London six days a week. Having this level of contact with my coach is essential to improve both my training and performance. SportsAid has also helped with my travel and accommodation expenses for competitions around the country and abroad, ensuring I can compete in quality competitions. Given the climate in England it is also essential that an athlete has the opportunity to go abroad with their coach to concentrate on training in a warm climate to prepare for the season. The help from SportsAid has allowed me to go warm weather training and therefore given me the quality preparation needed for competition. Essentially SportsAid has allowed me to relax in the knowledge that I have their support and backing thus giving me confidence in my ability and enabling me to continue training in the way that I need to, in order to reach my goals.”
