Sport and Physical Activity Networks

Sport and Physical Activity Networks are alliances of local agencies committed to working together as part of the County Sports Partnership to ensure co-ordinated delivery of sport and physical activity that prioritises and meets the needs of the local community and supports local & national Strategy.

 Geography

There will be four Sport & Physical Activity Networks across Bucks, determined to best fit with Local Authority and other existing structures:

  • Milton Keynes
  • Aylesbury Vale
  • Wycombe
  • Chiltern & South Bucks

Purpose – Delivery System

The Sport and Physical Activity Networks will contribute to the development of a delivery system for Bucks Sport:

  • Communications & Advocacy
  • Strategic planning & Co-ordination
  • Bring together and align partners existing priorities and targets
  • Influence policy & strategy by understanding and clearly articulating the needs of the local community
  • Common agreed visions for sport - Joined up thinking and integrated delivery
  • Clear, accountable structures and direction
  • Co-ordinated resources & planning including funding & facilities
  • Effective communication mechanisms
  • Effective links with non-sport agencies to maximise contribution to sporting and wider social outcomes 

Outcomes

Where appropriate the Sport and Physical Activity Networks will strive towards common outcomes of the National Framework for Sport, Regional Plan and CSP Strategy:

Delivering Sporting Outcomes:

  • More Physically Literate Young People
  • More People Participating more often in sport and physical activity
  • Widen access to opportunities for sport and physical activity
  • Higher levels of Performance

Contributing to Wider Social Outcomes:

  • Healthier Communities
  • Improved Education & Lifelong Learning
  • Safer & Stronger communities
  • Vibrant Economy & Workforce
  • Every Child Matters

Priorities – Participation, Pathways & performance

Where appropriate the Sport and Physical Activity Networks will contribute to:

  • Pathways for young people – Early years & physical literacy, High Quality PE, School Sport & Club Links, Clubs, Coaching, Competition & events, Talent Identification & Development & Participation in FE/HE.
  • Workforce Development – Coaches, officials, volunteers, teachers, facility staff & development practitioners
  • Widening Access & Disability Sport - Women & Girls, BEM, Low Income/Deprivation, Older People, ALL Children & Young People
  • Recreational & Everyday Activity – Active Communities,  Active Workplaces, Active Transport, Active Recreation                              

Values & Principles

Sport and Physical Activity Networks will operate within the agreed values & principles of the CSP:

Membership

Sport and Physical Activity Networks consist of local delivery agents from a range of relevant organisations and sectors who have a role to play in the delivery of sport and physical activity in the area. 

It is recommended that the core membership of each SPAN should include: 

  • Local authority (Sports Development Officer or equivalent, and other officers as agreed)
  • Sports College (Director of Specialism or equivalent)
  • School Sports Partnership (Partnership Development Manager)
  • Primary Care Trust (Public Health / Physical Activity Manager)
  • LEA
  • Higher Education / Further Education (as relevant)
  • Main Leisure facilities (in-house manager or contractor)
  • County Sports Partnership core team Sports Development Manager
  • A voluntary sport sector rep. e.g. Local Sports Council

 Other members, depending on local priorities, will also be included.
